Lombok’s traditional Arts & Crafts
Because of Lombok’s Sasak past, Lombok has developed its own unique style of traditional arts and crafts. The variety of designs and styles is a direct reflection of Lombok’s unique blend of cultures and peoples, differing beliefs and way of life, so it is only natural that the designs and styles be equally varied. Stone Carving Lombok is home to several villages which specialise in stone carving.  It seems that every village specialises in one particular material, whether it be stone, wood or textiles. The stone carving artisans spend countless hours creating amazing sculptues that would look at ease in some of the best homes in the world, so no wonder their pieces are highly sought after.  We highly recommend a visit! Wood Carving The artisans from the wood carving villages are absolute perfectionists… creating intricate carvings of traditional and non-traditional figures, these villages are very worth a visit. If you are seeking ornaments for you home to make people comment, then a visit to a traditional wood carving village is an absolute must. Lombok has some of the best wood carvers there are, and all of their products are carved in cultivated Mahogany, so none of the wood is from rainforest. Traditional Textiles Several villages on Lombok have created such amazing works of art from traditional hand woven textiles that they are now highly sought after right through Europe. These textiles are woven using the “back-strap”method, where the weaver actually sits inside the weaving loom, and leans back into the look to either tighten or loosen the weave itself. This method is quite unique. There are no patterns to follow for the weaver, it is done entirely from memory, with the style being handed down from mother to daughter. There are also some textiles woven by men, though this is rare and so they have become quite valuable. Well worth a visit! Batik Art Batik is the traditional method of ‘dye exclusion using wax’, where a cloth has a wax  scene created on it, and when dyed, the wax excludes the dye from that area.  Using intricate designs, and multiple applications, amazing works of art are able to be created. These artists are extremely proud of their works and they have also become highly prized around the world. Mataram Art Market Mataram City has  a major market dedicated to displaying and offering for sale all of the main art styles created on Lombok. This market allows visitors to see all of the various styles in the one place, and if they so desire, to make purchases. Very worth a visit!
